Eva Hesse, Ennead 1966

“Ennead” a group of nine, here referring to the nine points from which the strings extend. The strings’ orderly insertion at the top of the work become increasingly chaotic as they tangle toward the floor. The few strands affixed to the adjacent wall cordon off a wedge of space that becomes part of the sculpture itself.
