Storm King
As part of our Hudson River Valley trip, Marjo and I explored Storm King Art Center in Mountainsville NY on May 20, 2015. Over one hundred carefully placed sculptures on 500 acres of land not far from the Hudson River. These photos show just a few of the wonders to behold. My favorite sculpture, of course, was “Mozart’s Birthday” by Mark di Suvero. I usually remember to play a Mozart Sonata every January 27, but I had never seen that date rendered in steel!
Many works by David Smith, whom I have long admired, were in the permanent collection along with Louise Nevelson, Richard Serra, and a host of others. Maya Lin’s beautiful Storm King Wavefields was too large for my pocket camera, but lovely to see. For a fascinating view of fine sculptures, take a picnic and stay all day. Before this visit I knew “Storm King” as the name of a march that my junior high band played. Now Storm King has much richer associations, but it is good to know that bands still play the march.
