Highland Gardens
From the day we arrived in Dornoch two weeks ago, the gardens of the Highlands of Scotland have brought much beauty into our lives. Not just visual beauty, but delightful fragrances, and happy thoughts of friends who love gardens and gardening. Here is the backyard of the rental house where we stayed the first week. I loved reading in the conservatory, surrounded by flowers.
Walking through town, we found many beautiful roses in bloom and a sign telling why.
On Sunday afternoon, while Steve and Roger played the golf course in nearby Brora, Nina and I explored the town and found more flowers there.
On our adventurous walk up the coast and through a caravan park, we found especially bright-colored flowers.
Back in Dornoch, we passed by a well-planted garden near the home of our friend Mary.
Mary then took us to see two nearby gardens of friends, the Smitty’s Cottage and the Curling Pond. We would never have discovered them on our own. Many fruits, vegetables and herbs were ready for picking. I resisted picking the raspberries, but made a portrait of one.
Steve and Roger played in a senior tournament at Fortrose and Rosemarkie Golf Course near Loch Ness yesterday. Walking into the town of Fortrose, we found Lady Gardeners at work for a homeowner who had suffered an injury. Nina and I had to restrain ourselves from joining the effort to keep this garden looking fabulous. A depiction of a Loch Ness monster is not uncommon in Highlands gardens.
